I love every word of what Khalil Gibran had to say on children (http://www.katsandogz.com/onchildren.html). It begins:
Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself…
Although I know that the choice to have children is often selfish, or made passively to satisfy social expectations rather than actively, understanding what Gibran has written, it need not be. In tune with the Tao, according to God’s will, or however you describe it, sometimes it can just be a maifestation of “Life’s longing for itself”.
…They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.
Every word of what he has written rings beautiful and true.
