Towards a Bra-free Instagram Experience
Lauren Hallden

I just joined Instagram a few months ago so I don’t know what they’ve figured out about me. What I do know is

  1. They’re a division of Facebook,
  2. When I was on Facebook, I was repeatedly spammed with ads for Russian brides and hot Asian singles near me,
  3. Flagging the ads as “not relevant” or “offensive” did not affect what Facebook showed me.

Essentially, advertisers pay for targeted impressions, and Facebook / Instagram deliver them to the advertiser. I left Facebook in May of 2010 after about nine months.

I wish I knew a workaround; I joined Instagram mostly to see what my friends are up to — I rarely post a photo. But if I start getting inundated with offensive ads, I’ll just leave.
