“ What bothers me most is the inability of folks to engage on the same level. That is, people do not understand how science works, how scientific arguments work, how evidence works, or how, should one want to refute something, that process works. Explaining how a biologist got biology wrong, or doesn’t understand simple biology, without offering any kind of evidence other than “clearly it must be…” (which at this point translates almost 100% of the time to “I’m going to say something that is clearly NOT clear but I’ll pretend I’ve proven it and then smile smugly”) shows a fundamental incapability to engage with ideas with which one disagrees.”

Exactly.

“ science is way off my field”

That’s science’s loss. You have the basics right, and so many don’t. If you can get over being bothered by the phenomenon above, I’m sure you’d make a great scientist in any area that interests you. It requires patience, and suffering fools gladly, I’m afraid. Most aren’t foolish, they may not lnow much, but are at least willing to listen and argue in a logical manner. But yes, you get too much of the “fundamental incapability to engage with ideas with which one disagrees.”

“ I’m not suggesting your argument is irrefutable (I agree with/believe what you’re saying here, but I don’t have the knowledge to refute it or offer other interpretations of data)”

Now THERE both I and the author can help. Fact check us! Demand that we show evidence! We can provide mountains of evidence for you to evaluate for yourself. Correct us where we’re wrong, please!

Here’s a good start:
