51–262 Effective/Ineffective Design

Example of effective design

This flight-searching page of StudentUniverse (mobile app) is an example of effective design. It’s intended for travelers who are looking for flight booking service. The purpose of the design is to enable users to easily input their traveling information and needs, including traveling locations, dates, traveler numbers, etc. This design is effective in the way it presents the information. It uses space and scale wisely, puts emphasis on the relatively important elements and makes them in the center of the page to be easily noticed. Also, the icons and buttons are designed to be recognizable and easy to identify to avoid confusion.

Example of ineffective design

The flight-searching page of Expedia (mobile app) is an example of ineffective design. Similarly, this page is also intended to collect information from travelers for flight booking service. Travelers need to input departure/arrival locations and desired traveling dates. On this page, all the content pieces are located on the top, leaving the rest of the page blank, which is an example of ineffective use of space and unbalanced scale. Comparatively, the buttons and icons such as the search button and the traveler number icon are very small and tiny, which makes them a little difficult to be spotted.
