Week 1

This week in class we learned about Organizational Communication. Some examples of Organizations are charities, non-profit groups, the Government, and corporations. From this lecture I learned that Organizational Communication refers to how language constructs relationships and different networks in order to complete a certain task. We also learned about the four challenges that are included in Organizational Communication.

The first challenge was Globalization. Today our world is connected on a much higher level than it has even been. This can cause a lack of privacy because you have an audience. This challenges the organizations to determine how to most effectively communicate in a multicultural environment. The next challenge we learned about was Terrorism. The main concern for this challenge was figuring out ways that the Government communication systems can best protect its citizens and borders. One of the ways that the Government could improve its protection would be to incorporate a more invasive surveillance, which would probably not appeal to most people.

The next challenge was climate change and all of the debates over policies that it brings about. The next challenge was demographics. Demographics pose a challenge in the way that companies advertise in certain areas. For example some areas may have a higher percentage of elderly people or a higher percentage of a certain race.

Lastly we watched a video that talked about how the world is flat, meaning that there is a greater ability to connect with other countries and that the playing field is now leveled. The one thing that I thought was very interesting about the talk was how the speaker touched on the topic about how its very important to incorporate mash-ups in higher education because it allows creativity and inspiration for new innovations.
