The world is always busy, too busy to care about what happened to Sara Hijazi during her life, but nobody can ignore impact she has on the world after her death. Every single individual in the Muslim community started educating themselves on the issue. Aunties Anonymous must be bussing. Or is there truly a telegram group out there for Muslim Aunties, I wonder?

So who was Sara Hegazi, and what did she do to receive all this hate and resentment? She is a well-educated Egyptian Atheist who was vocal about her political opinions and opposition of the regime in Egypt, which cost her her job. Interestingly enough, she shares the same opinions and reasons for opposing the regime as the moderate Muslims and as the leading Muslim parties in the region, and eventually suffered a similar fate to the political activists, when in 2017 she got arrested for waving the pride flag at a music concert. …

We all have different beliefs and different meanings in life, but there are moments where we have to be firm in where we are, not on the fence, in order not to open the door to the old demons we’ve left behind. Granted, some of us have had a friendlier, more liberal experience within Islam, which is no excuse to dismiss the toxicity that can sprout from it. This is why today I talk about agnostic vs gnostic atheism.

Personally I’ve finally reached the conclusion that this is the only life I will have with my conscious, with this form of my soul. Death is the only guarantee. It truly is liberating knowing that there is no eternity, there are no huge consequences to everyday actions beyond this realm of existence, there is no peeping tom in my mind that’s counting all my thought crimes for me. This knowledge has allowed me to explore what I really want in life, since there is no second take. …
