A Map of Refugees

Map I made from 2014 UNHCR Statistics — these are the top ten countries that are seeking asylum in Europe. Thickness of the line is a function of the percentage of people from the origin country going to a particular destination.

Recently, the displacement of refugees has held the attention of the media captive.

The articles featuring young children and pregnant women who were fleeing their home countries forced me into sympathy. However, the striking images and amount of attention provoked by these recent refugees feels odd.

I realized, along with many others, that this is only because of the attitudes that many European countries have towards these refugees. This is no surprise.

What is surprising is the lack of attention and news about the refugees who have been seeking asylum in other developing countries.

In 2014, 1.5 million refugees left Afghanistan to go to Pakistan. In that same time period Iran gained nearly a million Afghan immigrants. These two statistics alone account for almost 5% of the worlds refugees to date.
