Today it was announced that Tory Lanez would be charged with assault for discharging his firearm. Now, I am still a baby-abolitionist, so I’m not going to lie, this made me so happy for many reasons.
The reason it took so long for him to get charged is due to Megan Thee Stallion telling the police that her feet were bleeding because she stood on glass. After all, she wanted to protect Tory (she cited the recent protests as the reason she chose not to speak on the issue). However, even though she did what she good (under the circumstances)…
I have been called a slut ever since I was 16. The first time I kissed a boy was at 17. Men may read this and think, “that makes no sense?” but women know that you don’t need to do much to be called a whore. You don’t even need to talk to a boy. An innocent smile can be akin to jet fuel, propelling the rumour mill into overdrive. I would text a male friend, go to school the next day and find out that we were fucking.
Though I am immune to most kinds of verbal abuse, some…
Almost two years ago I decided to leave the only home I’d ever known, in search of something I never had the opportunity to call my own. Therapy me, probably would not act so impulsively now. After all, I had no university place, I had no qualifications, but what I did have was all the audacity possible to make the jump. I needed time to stand still for a moment so I could think. Now, this is scientifically not possible (yet), so I went for the next best thing. So for 3/4 of it, it was just me, my laptop…
As a publication that prides itself on the broad spectrum of identities and voices we represent. We thought it time to emulate that across the board. So, come February we will be launching our new newsletter!
Every month we will be spotlighting one person to take over our newsletter for 3 weeks! We are looking for writers, artists and photographers who would like to have their work featured! The content you put out will be entirely up to you!
Perhaps you want to educate us on African Spirituality or life as an Asian American in these current times. Do you…
Hello all,
I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday and that you are looking forward to the coming year. Today’s conversation has a lot to do with my binge-watch of Big Mouth. This season dealt on the topic of mental health and my first thought was how lucky the teens of today were to have a show of this calibre. I am 25 and some of the conversations had are things I have only just learnt. The second was about how I totally vibe with Jessi. Grateful toad? Yuk. Especially, discussing the things you are grateful for, however…
Hi friends,
To be honest, I don’t even know where to start. November has been wild guys! I don’t know about you guys, but during the US election, I didn’t sleep. I think I only got some shut-eye from the 8th? Then came travelling from South Africa to the UK. Settling in, celebrating my 25th birthday and finishing my assignments. I think today is one of the first days I have felt present, and it’s already the 27th? Madness.
But I had a great chat with my therapist today, and she reminded me of the importance of remembering everything we…
Hello everyone!
I hope you’re well and staying safe.
Apologies for missing last month’s newsletter. Due to the current political climate the publication seemed to grow overnight so it took us a while to get back to equilibrium.
It’s crazy to think that this publication was launched July 2018 and it took us almost 6 months to reach 1k followers. A growth we seem to now make in just over a month.
So to those with publications of their own, trust the journey and definitely don’t compare yourself to others. I’m sure once you gain momentum you’ll be unstoppable!
Black people can not be racist, this is a fact. We can be prejudiced, bigots and even all round despicable people however, we can not be racist. It is impossible.
Now, I can imagine that this statement will make a bunch of people uncomfortable. There may even be some who have read the title of my piece and are foaming at the mouth. Ready to tell me of that one Black man who called you a ‘cracker’ or a ‘Karen’ or a ‘bitch’. Or this Black girl who got on Twitter to say “I don’t like white people”. …
Hello everyone!
I hope you are all well and staying safe!
With these past two weeks, I have found myself at a loss for words which, as a writer, can seem a tad bit ironic. Each time I try to put paper to pen (or rather fingertips to laptop keys), I find myself stuck on what to say. The past week has been an explosion of emotions. Yet, for Black people weeks such as this one have occurred and will continue to occur. …
