Overcome fear
Is it possible to be affraid, but still pursue the actions we fear of?
Well, there’s this book by Susan Jeffers “Feel the fear and do it anyway” which states that it is in fact feasible.
Working on your fear you can’t expect of ourselves to be dauntless. The thing is to act in spite of being affraid. The emotion of fear is an inherent part of our lives as this is how our brain works. That’s why it is worth to adapt to it and do your thing anyway.
First of all, to reduce your fear you should develop greater confidence in your ability to cope with everything you encounter in your life.
Theese days you don’t have to worry about a tiger approaching you in the jungle. You are scared because you doubt if you can handle a tuff situation. What you are affraid of is not the situation itself, but its outcome. How will you feel, how will it impact you.
For example — you are not affraid of public speaking itself, but of being laughed at when you stumble over your words, which will make you feel bad about yourself.
You are not affraid of being left by your partner, but of feeling lonely, not able to handle life on your own.
You are affraid of an effect, not the situation itself.
This is why the key to cope with fear is to develop within yourself a strong conviction, that whatever happens, you will manage.
Think of all the ups and downs in your life. You’ve been through stuff and you’re still here, willing to live, learn and accomplish things. What didn’t brake you, made you learn, made you stronger.
Whatever happens, i will manage.
At first this thought might seem new, weird, unfamiliar. And that’s ok. Give yourself time to get used to it. Think of all the times you have struggled and made it through. Write it down with pen and paper. Imagine different situations and see yourself handling them. See yourself reacting constructively. See yourself finding solutions.
Susan Jeffers writes: “Every time you encounter something that forces you to “handle it,” your self-esteem is raised considerably. You learn to trust that you will survive, no matter what happens. And in this way your fears are diminished immeasurably.”
Build trust in yourself. Have confidence in your reasoning and abilities that have led you through life to this day.
