Why I’m Building a Company to Tackle the Internet of Things

I’ve officially started three tech companies, the latest is an IoT platform company named Losant. I started all three with the same co-founder, Brandon, we’ve been working together for more than ten years on different projects. We successfully sold the majority of the assets of our first company. This sale gave us the opportunity to invest in to ourselves and fund our second company, Modulus. Modulus is an application hosting platform which continues to be successful in the public and enterprise space. In less than two years we were acquired by Progress Software and the business is still running today.

So why tell you about these previous companies? Well two reasons, first to set the stage that myself and my co-founder have been there and been successful in our previous journeys. Second, to say that we weren’t solving a big enough problem with Modulus. Don’t get me wrong it was a worthwhile problem that still exists today but it just isn’t the scale that I think we can affect.

If I look at where the world is headed (I try to do this as much as possible), it looks like an interconnected mess of devices, people, and businesses. As the connected world becomes larger, more spread out, and intelligent there’s a group of people that are going to drive us forward — creators. These people come in all shapes and sizes but all have the same problem — they need to build more faster. At Structure we want to attack this head on, starting with how you build a connected world. If we can make this easy enough we empower a whole new set of creators to build their own connected world.

I know that past success doesn’t guarantee any for the future. However, I think it prepares me for the Trough of Sorrow to some extent — nothing completely prepares you. What I do know is that the team we have at Losant is one of the best I’ve ever worked with and our agility to navigate to where we need to be is going to be our advantage.

Just imagine building your own connected future. What does that look like?
