The flag is a symbol and nothing else. As a symbol, it can mean many different things to different people and we attach that significance filtered through our own experiences and even agendas. Some folks see a family member who will never come home because they made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our nation. Seen in this light, Colin is flat out wrong and should be condemned at the top of your lungs.

Guess what though — that’s not the symbol he is protesting. He is protesting against the symbol of a nation that (by and large) fails to live up to its own high ideals. A nation that treats people differently because of the color of their skin, and even more so, because of the size of their wallet.

That family member that died in the service? They didn’t just die to preserve our ideals and our way of life, they died to protect what we WILL become someday. We’re not there yet, and the protest is his way of calling attention to the very real fact that we are not yet there…
