Vicki — a really good piece that sheds a little light on what goes on behind the curtain. You are 100% correct that there are dozens of reasons why it’s probably not about us at the stage of the process — however, it still reflects very poorly about the organization in general and the recruiter specifically to not get a follow-up.

I have grudgingly accepted that the 2 hours I spent crafting a targeted resume and cover letter while reaching out directly to a couple of key people in the process may lead to nothing except a roaring silence. I will not accept the same treatment after the (mutual) time and energy spent getting to that last hurdle in the race and having it just dissolve into nothing like the bubbles in a warm can of soda.

I will say that it’s only happened to my once before — after 6 interviews and the office tour I got the same crickets. After 3 weeks of emails, phone calls and texts to the recruiter I was told the standard “found someone who’s skills more closely, blah, blah, blah” excuse that doesn’t really say anything.

The reality is that after my last interview they’d already made up their minds, the office tour as a sham and the recruiter didn’t have the balls to tell me. (In the film version of my life, the company would call me back in for a better position a month later and I would be given the opportunity for Aaron Sorkin to to deliver my rejection speech to them. It would be terribly clever, professional, and rip them to shreds simultaneously. Of course that didn’t happen though…)
