Construction in Process

At 8 a.m. in the morning, walking through the still silent construction site, we met in the studio surprisingly on time. Till now, we had about twenty posters in different sizes and more single elements that had not been used. We also had the red vinyls and the black duck tapes in bag. In other words, we had the materials prepared and ready to “construct”.

The first thing to do was to make a mockup wall of the posters. We all gathered together around the single screen and gave our advice on the poster wall. Each person had their own creative ideas, like a little red vinyl boy sitting on a poster, or a clear film on top of a large poster. The process went quite smoothly. After showing the mockup to James, there was the “favorite part” — printing!

Waiting was SO stressful.
The poster was coming out!
Have never cut anything so large.

After cutting everything, we started installing in Gallery 5. We recorded the installing process as our video, which also works in concert with our concept “GD in Construction”. Though in the end we did not print it out as our title, but use “Persistence of the Posters” instead.

Installing was much quicker than we expected, thanks to our great teamwork. Coco was basically tearing the tapes all the time. She said her nails broke after that. Nicole climbed a lot up and down the ladders to paste the posters; and Wenjing was the one who coordinated everything.

Things happened. But it was quite interesting that James said he thought this was designed on purpose.

After the first critique, we strengthened the posters, changed the titles and figured out a better way to deal with the binder.

It still has many places to improve. But emotionally, it is the best show.
