For most of human history we have all been poly, its only in the last 10,000 years that we have been forced into monogamy to meet the needs of patriarchy. Patriarchy has largely gone from marriage but we still have the habit, leading to the stress of having to make these unnecessary decisions (and keeping relationship councillors in a job).
