Taylor’s songs can be put into three categories: quill pen, fountain pen, and glitter pen. This song is from Taylor’s’ pandemic-era quill pen album, folklore. Quill pen songs are my favourite; they are characterized by "antiquated" language, making the piece feel like a page from a Charlotte Brontë novel. Beyond the language, "invisible string" also references a concept from a Charlotte Brontë novel—the invisible string.

The invisible string theory is archaic. Long ago, people began exploring the concept of being tied to a destined lover. Its roots are in the Chinese folk myth of the Red Thread of Fate. According to this belief, an invisible red cord is tied around the fingers of two soulmates. The magical string may twist and turn, but it will never break—the bound lovers will always be destined to meet.

Instead of a red cord, Taylor's invisible string is a strand of gold thread. Regardless of colour, it still represents a connection covertly tying one to one's soulmate. I believe in the invisible string theory, not only because I am a passionate Swiftie but also because I find it odd yet reassuring to believe that our fates are already written in the universe's table of contents. It's' peculiar to take in that at this moment in time, the I'm destined to be with exists. But in a parallel universe sense, they are going about with their daily routines, oblivious to our entangled destiny. Nonetheless, it's ultimately reassuring, knowing that things will work out and that no matter what turbulence may occur in between, this unseeable force will guide me to meet the destined one.
