The last lecture by Anna-Kaisa Kultima points out some interesting insight from the game developer perspective. This lecture is quite different from the previous lectures because rather than discussing the games as “object”, but she points out the games “people” who created the games as the main focus. Most of the insight that she gave from the last lecture mostly based on her empirical studies on Game Jams. Value of the games important to be defined before we created some games.

My academic background as a Designer (especially as Service Designer) makes me more aware of human needs and behaviour…

The last lecture by Petri Ikonen, Creative Director for Tracktwenty, EA Games making me too see mobile games in different perspective. I’m amazed when he stated that one of his games studio, Sim City Build It, actually has more players if compared with a total player who playing Sim City series. This is actually something that hard to believe because as far as I know, I don’t know anyone who related with me playing this game…

Level design is also an important element to create a playful experience when we playing games. Even if the game has a good mechanic, narrative, story, or graphic, it can be ruined instantly if the level design goes wrong. Level design is like another foundation of the game that determines how the game experience feels like to play. …

From the last lecture given by Mikko Rautalahti, I learn about how we implement Narrative Design in Games. Mikko has good experience for Narrative Design because he learns about how to design a narrative on AAA games (in this case Alan Wake), and Mobile Games (his role as Narrative Director in Next Games). I found out that there is a huge difference between them, wherein Mobile Games, the decision is based on the Data (for example…

What I thinking about at first when I heard the Narrative game is about how we design a story in a game and how to make story embedded in-game mechanic and relevant to the context. I think Narrative Games is an important element for adding reasons for a player to play the games by engaging emotion in it. For example, Final Fantasy Tactics, a classic turn-based RPG game that released in 1997 (21 years ago), but…

Prototyping word is familiar to me as Designer because to get insight and feedback from the idea, we need to test the idea by creating a real and interactable prototype. I also learn about the rapid prototype, where we can use sketch and paper to create the prototype. We don’t have to create a good visual looked prototype, as long we can deliver what the core idea from the prototype to the user. …
