Open Letter to the ZZK Family and Beyond

We were born in the spirit of hope and resistance, what we do going forward is more important than ever

Our label was founded in the aftermath of social and economic crisis in Argentina. In those dark days, days of uncertainty, instability, and fear, a small group of artists came together and responded the ways artists inevitably do: created. The music from that period became a beacon of hope, community, survival of spirit, and ultimately turned into a musical movement which has grown world wide in scope.

As a Latin American label with team members based in 5 countries around the world, we know that the political turmoil in the United States has repercussions far and wide. We know that there is genuine fear: fear for the most vulnerable among us, fear of economic instability, fear for the planet as a whole. We know this, because we feel it to.

But since we have been here before, because our label was born in the spirit of hope and resistance, we also know what we do going forward is more important than ever. In the words of Toni Morrison:

This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear.

As we shake off the shock and get back to work, we want to affirm these core commitments to you:

  • ZZK stands for diversity, culture, and the interchange of ideas between Latin America and the rest of the world.
  • We are a platform for Latin American art and culture, and are committed to helping the artists we work with build a sustainable career while celebrating their own unique heritage and artistic voice.
  • Our community is and always will be open and inclusive, regardless of language, background, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, or ethnicity. We celebrate our differences, and are all united on the dance floor.
  • No matter what lies ahead, we will always be here for to shine a light on Latin American culture, our culture.

In the spirit of celebrating culture and coming together in uncertain times, we’ll be donating 50% of all profits from music purchases from the ZZK and AYA Records Bandcamp through the end of the year to #EmergingUS.

Finally, if you love Latin American music and culture and are looking for ways to protect and celebrate it going forward, please do consider contributing to our crowdfunding campaign.

Thank you for your spirit, your encouragement, your enthusiasm, and your appreciation for ZZK’s music and mission. Don’t hesitate to reach out, we are in this together.

Siempre adelante,

Grant & The ZZK Team
