Title: A timely memoir by a remarkable man

Review: This is a great memoir by a remarkable man.
Bill Torbert weaves a compelling story of what it means to become awake to the complexities of life amidst ongoing social upheaval. How does one even attempt to transform oneself? How can we transform the societies in which we live?
Donโt be daunted by all this. This book is fun to read. Bill Torbert is a playful fellow and keeps the reader entertained. A permanent dent in his head from an early action inquiry gone awry is the source of his self-description as the titular Numbskull.
Above all this is a book about the theory and practice of a personally-engaged and self-aware form of social science. I myself am a social scientist, and the insights contained in this vivid memoir just blow me away. Counter to most post-modernists, Torbert embraces the idea of objective truths as discoverable by research. However, these โthird-personโ truths are always โ always โ flavored by the subjective perspectives of our personal lives (first-person) and the groups and cultures we live in (second-person). Likewise, we must conduct our research with lenses on the past, the present, and the future. Finally, we must conduct our research in ways that account for the developmental transformations that result in an increasing maturity of thought and action. This is a remarkable way to view oneโs work as a scientist and a responsible human being. Torbert calls this meta-methodology Collaborative Developmental Action Inquiry (or just Action Inquiry for short.)
If you appreciate science, human transformation, and a bold life lived on a big stage โ plus some fine front line reporting of the sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll of the Great American Journey, you just might love this book. I do!

Title: An intriguing inquiry into the pursuit of goodness, beauty and truth in everyday life

Review: This book pretends to be about one manโs life. Donโt be fooled! It is a book about all of us. It is a book about the future. Not the future as it definitely will be โ but certainly a future that is possible, and that I, for one, hope for.
Amongst the many narratives woven together through its pages, this book beckons us โ individually, and as a civilization and a species โ to take the next step in the philosophy and practice of science.
Modern science spent its early years in a dangerous world dominated by religion. Because its personality was formed in reaction to religion, rather than in an independent, non-reactive, healthy and balanced way, the practice of modern science is less than its full healthy self. This is most easily seen in its dogmatic adherence to materialistic worldviews and methodologies โ which in retrospect can be seen as an understandable overcorrection. Perhaps this overcorrection was necessary for a time โ but at this point in the history of the philosophy of science it is time to drop the narrow mindedness built into its core, and help science open to its full potential.
Between the entertaining lines of the story of his life, Torbert invites us to join him and help mainstream science do just that. With examples across a wide range of contexts he helps us see how to expand the practice of science beyond ivory towers and corporate R&D departments, into our own personal pursuit of truth, beauty and goodness in our careers, our relationships, and our everyday lives in general.
There are many other threads of wisdom woven through this book, but at least for me, the most exciting and promising is Torbertโs vision and example of bringing more intelligence and greater sophistication to our practice of epistemology (discerning wisdom from ungrounded opinion) in our daily lives.
Over this last year weโve seen an explosion of extremely sloppy epistemologies: an increasing disregard for actual evidence and due process in forming beliefs. We are faced with a toxic mixture of (A) a generally disembodied society, (B) widespread anxiety unconsciously motivating many to further disassociate, and ยฉ continually improving technologies such as the Internet which increasingly enable escape into ungrounded fantasies.
Against this societal backdrop this book โ and the wisdom it offers around updating and expanding science to better serve us in our pursuit of truth, loving relationships and the good life โ comes at exactly the right time.

Title: A stunningly honest and insightful developmental memoire.

Review: What surprised me the most โ and what I appreciated most โ about this memoire were Torbertโs thoughtful, courageous, and honest reflections about sex, intimacy, and power in his close friendships and relationships. He recounts with startling honesty how, over the course of his career, he navigated the desire to be in authentic, intimate connection with others โ a personal and most important embodiment of action inquiry. While this orientation coloured his professional adventures, it was equally present in the ones he carried out in the bedroom. This book contains germane and liberating reflection on both. I was really inspired by Torbertโs willingness to break taboo and reveal his beyond-conventional yet deeply human encounters, and I think anyone looking to live a more true and full life would find this book well worth the read.

Title: A behind-the-scenes field guide to action inquiry

Review: Torbertโs gift to the world is his willingness to serve as subject and researcher, both at the same time, and then vulnerably reveal what he finds in the process of serving both roles. In Numbskull, Torbert trains the lens on himself in retrospect as he recounts engaging his own theory-in-development-in-action throughout the first half of his life. Through his accessible and anecdotally-rich writing, Torbert offers a field guide for his theory (developed, practiced, and refined over a lifetime) by highlighting his moments of timely action and of timely inaction, while also revealing his inevitable missteps along the way. A must read for those seeking to learn beyond theory alone how to practice action inquiry and show up more fully human in this world.
