Weekly Update 24
I feel more and more in a constant rush to get things done until December. At the same time, I’m losing track of my progress as I only focus on what is left to do. And from this, a feeling of stagnation arises. A very good situation to pause for a moment and reflect on the last week in a weekly update.
Last week I finished up the facade as far as possible. No more mental breakdowns, just quick work with nice results. I prepared 4 sheets and Jürgen helped to install them. I could then take measure from the newly installed sheets and prepare the next several ones. The only part missing now is around the opening for the flue pipe. I’m still waiting for the wall-element which will shield the timber from the pipe’s heat. Customising the facade sheets around this calcium-silicate block will be the last challenge of the facade.
When there was nothing more to do for the facade I used the table saw in the garage for the first time. Several parts for the interior still needed to be cut. It was quickly done on the large saw and the pieces fit fine. They are not perfect but for inner walls they are ok. However, I will need to step up my table saw game for the furniture and be more precise. One observation I made is that the table saw is great for larger pieces but not small ones. I had to do some of the 45-degree angle cuts with the circular saw because the pieces were too small for the table saw’s stop.

On Friday I had a final talk with Marc on how to do the roof. Some questions had piled up in the last days and Marc took the time to discuss every single on thorough and thoughtfully. It turns out that the edge parts of the roof need to be adapted to the angles of my roof structure. Unfortunately, these pieces need to be mounted first which further delays the roof. I still hope major parts of the roof will be finished end of next week.
All Saturday and half of Sunday I was at a tournament my brother played in. So not much progress. On Sunday evening the CFO — Florian helped me get started with the roof battens. We continued the next morning and now battens are 90% done. There are still some minor tasks, for example, working out the bug screen at the roof edge.
At the moment I have no idea if I can finish in December. No clue at all. The list of things to do is not that long anymore but I cannot estimate how long it will take to complete a thing. E.g. the roof: only when actually doing the task you realise pitfalls you cannot see before. Another example is the flooring. It needs to be reinforced as the current OSB blind floor is not stable enough to later properly support the vinyl floor. Results in additional weight & cost calculation, material choice, ordering, and installation.
But the only sensible option is to give it everything, pushing every week and tracking progress to not lose motivation. Let’s see how this will turn out…
