Embassies and Consulates
Part of A Better Guide to Beijing’s Practical A-Z
Diplomats inevitably err on the side of caution, and the British Foreign Office often advises British independent travellers to register with them (in Běijīng t 8529 6600, latest advice at www.gov.uk/government/world/china), as does the US State Department (step.state.gov/step/ to register; in Běijīng for emergencies or after hours t 8531 4000; beijing.usembassy-china.org.cn), which frequently issues warnings against venturing into certain parts of the city, and in particular the Sān Lǐ Tún Bar Street. This does tend to be the location for problems when the government has been whipping up anti-foreign feeling. Canadians in trouble should call their consulate at t 5139 4000. Australians are encouraged to register at www.china.embassy.gov.au/bjng/consular.html, t 5140 4111. New Zealanders may register at register.safetravel.govt.nz/login, t 8531 2700.
