Also known as the Museum of Ancient Animals, this building has a modern front on a seemingly rather older venue, but its collection of fossilised ancient animals is substantial, including a hall of towering wired-together dinosaur skeletons guaranteed to give small children nightmares for some time to come. There’s little in English, so the pleasures here are visual rather than more broadly educational.

The Běijīng Planetarium is a short walk to the east, and Běijīng Zoo opposite that. Or continue west, crossing to the north side of the road, to walk west through Purple Bamboo Park to the Wànshòu Sì.
