This month I am engaged in an experiment. Normally I spend a lot of time with my family, who live only a few doors away from my apartment in Amsterdam. However, they are on a month-long adventure to Great Britain, leaving me on my own. Rather than feeling sorry for myself, I am creating a month’s worth of exciting touristy plans where I am going to pretend to be a tourist in my own city.

I haven’t developed a full itinerary yet. Today, August 1st, I helped my family get to the train station, then came home and relaxed after several days of helping them pack for their own adventure, which consists of biking all over Great Britain and camping for a good portion of that time.

I am also getting started on creating a calendar. I am going to publish the first draft of it, which will consist of a few plans I’ve made in advance by necessity, such as making reservations for the Van Gogh Museum and my oncologist appointment, which was scheduled six months ago. I will add activities as they arise—some of which will be pre-planned, and some will be scheduled the way I most enjoy things: on the fly, depending upon my mood and the weather.
