Five Questions to Ask When Planning Your Next Trip
The answers will help you pick your next destination quickly and easily.
If you have limited time to travel like I do, you want to make your trip fit your idea of perfect as much as possible. One of the best ways to do that is to pick a great location, however you define that. Here are five important questions to ask yourself before choosing your destination.
1. What activities are you most interested in?
Many places have a multitude of entertainment, art, and food to offer but deciding what you want to focus on can help narrow down where to go. Some places are more well known for certain activities like art museums, historic sites, or outdoor exploration. Local cuisine can also be a draw, whether you’re interested in food, drink, or both. Deciding what you want to spend your time doing will help you decide where to visit.
2. What kind of weather/landscape do you want to experience?
Determining the surroundings you’ll enjoy best is one of the most effective ways to cut down on your list of potential destinations. Figuring out whether you’d like to go somewhere hot or cold, be by the coast or inland, rural countryside or bustling city, developed country or not, will all lead to a final decision being easily reached. One thing to keep in mind is that crossing hemispheres can mean drastically different seasons. For example, summer months in the northern hemisphere are winter months for those in the southern hemisphere.
3. Do you want something familiar or very different?
Although mentally stimulating being immersed in an extremely different culture can be taxing for some people, which is why it is important to consider when choosing where to travel. Personally, I find it energizing to be surrounded by the completely unfamiliar. Really, it is up to personal preference, both have their pros and cons. And of course, you may go somewhere culturally similar to your home, but find it isn’t exactly what you assumed or heard it would be! That’s the fun of adventure!
4. How long are you willing to spend traveling?
The answer to this question can really cut down on your options of places to go. If you only have a few days for your trip, spending most of it traveling isn’t very efficient. Usually, the less time you have, the closer to home you stay.
5. What kind of budget do you have for the trip?
The more you are willing to spend, the further and longer you can go. The first place this applies is to flights, unless of course you score a fantastic deal. There are many locations you can travel that have a low cost of living with high quality of life, such as some countries in South America and Southeast Asia. Staying in hostels, using services such as Airbnb or Vacation Rentals By Owner (VRBO), and finding cheap (but safe) eats can stretch your funds.
By answering these five questions, you should be able to figure out your final destination quickly and easily! Happy travels!
