Week 4

User interview

While continuing our secondary research from last week, we started to write down our interview protocol, and initiate conversations with interviewees this week.

Interview Protocol

After we started our initial secondary research, we also started to draft our interview protocol for our future user interviews. Our goal of the interview was to learn from our potential audiences about:

  • Current opinions on the school/education
  • Their vision of future & future education
  • Their interpretation of “future-ready learners”
  • What’s going well, what could be better

We created a google doc to list our questions, rephrase and modify them in smooth order. We classified our interviewees into 3 groups: parents, students, and teachers/education practitioners. Each group has a set of interview questions and structure crafted only for them.

After finishing the 1st version, we sent our draft to Hajira and Sofía for their feedbacks. Overall, they thought that we ask great interview questions and listed them out methodically. Minor modifications were needed. They also suggest that we can iterate our protocol as we conduct interviews.

Collaboration with Team X

Since Team X also has a focus on “future-ready leaner” in Santa Clara, we worked with Team X to create a protocol for our joint interview with the principal and students at New Valley High School located at SCUSD. Both of our teams kept wondering how much of the insights can be considered under the Santa Clara context? It will be interesting to see how much of our assumptions and insights from other school districts can be applied to SCUSD.

User Interview

After modifying the interview protocol based on Hajira and Sofía’s feedback, we reached out to the list of potential interviewees we thought of during initial secondary research and initiated conversations with them. Our contact list includes K-12 teachers, principals, parents, and a high school student. They represent a broad range of roles and perspectives in the education field.

This week’s interviewees include:

  • a high school student
  • a language arts teacher
  • a reading specialist
  • former high school principal

We created a separate google doc for each of them to take notes on what they said during our zoom interviews for our synthesis process.

For our next step, we will continue to have conversations with more interviewees next week. We would also like to extract insights from our secondary research and primary research, synthesize our findings, and see what direction they will take our project.
