koi, part 1 of diptych, debora Ewing

once we huddled against the flow
solace touching fin to scale
we grew stronger then

we wrote our love in bubbled laughter
turned sideways to the current
allowing one of us to rest

water cuts into rock
paper grows brittler
spawning tells time

a river runs to its end
if the sun burns too bold
fish will languish in the mud

flopping gasping gills to lungs
perhaps this is where we grew feet
climbed out of the bayou one by one
