Our Generation is Suffering

Over the years, I have collected a number of stories from friends, family and complete strangers. Some have been a burden to carry but they’ve given me a wide peak into human existence and suffering. I believe what you learn from listening and observing people is something you can’t learn in those big fat books.

I have been a listener at 7cups for quite some time now. It’s a platform where people who cannot afford a psychologist can talk about and discuss their problems anonymously or otherwise. They can speak about their depression, their relationship issues and, existential crises. Lament. Complain and cry.

I just spent a small amount of time having conversations with someone who is struggling with life. I’ve concluded that our young people are in a deep crisis. They lack motivation and meaning in life. They are lonely as ever in this hyper-connected world. They are stuck in their self-concocted realities, making them blind to the gift of life. They are suicidal, deeming their life unworthy.

It has made me think long and hard about where have we gone wrong? Our ancestors were certainly more happier than us. They were more resilient, more adaptive and more content. Why is the present world suffering despite all the progress and advancement? Where are we headed as humanity? There is so much with which we are burdened, From dangers as big as the climate change to the little sorrows of our bitter loneliness.

The people I’ve been speaking to are from all around the world. They have similar problems and challenges regardless of their culture, race, religion or gender. Maybe they are the ones around you who seem all good on the outside but their internal world is in a conflict too big for their souls to bear. The reason why so many people resort to talking to strangers is because they don’t have anyone around them they can trust. They have no one that will listen to them without judgment.

Whatever happened to empathy? I see the Goddess of compassion put to shame.
