Sweet Back Porch Music

(For Catherine, more Lyric than Poem)

I sat at your doorstep
while you played Emmylou
and I sang a bit with you
that old dog you had
kept nudging my hand
until I couldn’t help but laugh

oh, there were so many sunny days like that
so many sunny days . . . back then
but time moves fast like a river when the rain comes in
and I don’t sing much . . . anymore

no, I don’t sing much . . .
not anymore

but I hope you’re still playin’ guitar
what would an after-life be worth
without friendship . . .
a dog,
and sweet back porch music?

Thank you for taking an interest in my writing. I am a potter who is still managing a poetry habit. I’m left- handed and sometimes, the world looks upside down.
