The Deadly Silence

matthew reyes@visionary_imaging

Our most beautiful white cotton towels soaked up red wine
spilt over from our latest words spoken in distress
Broken shards of crystal goblet glasses with their finely designed
golden rims laid in wait for one misstep
The gift of our finest China platter stood its ground
yet
something about its shattered corners even when repaired
would forever be the reminder of our shattered lives
We sit exhausted on opposite sides of our once comfortable
ottoman
arms enervated, fatigue greets our loins and in our hearts,
a deadly silence
the kind of silence that immediately suffocated anything that grew
Our Mona Lisa Smile replaced with the blood-stained tears down
the face of our stained glass souls
The beautiful sunlight now cast a shadow of the cross
upon to which neither of us dares to look
And it was then we knew
This love of ours would never again be renewed

Now from time to time we in our own world reflecting
upon that beautiful summer day when we each proclaimed
“I do”
Never for a moment thinking that sentence was only the
beginning of the many painful things
“I’ll do to you”
More and more we find ourselves waiting patiently for the
passing of the thunderstorms
to enjoy the rainbows
hoping foolishly that we will again someday find each other
at the end of our elusive beginning . . .
