A Cornered Gurl

Wreckage

plucking her battered limbs
from the slit of her disheveled roof,
they watched her body
change form

swollen breaths carried into
the thick air
drowning the faithless ears
of rescuers

they called her time of death
sure that life left her a long
time ago—but a higher power
ripped the Grim Reaper
from his post

“This one, you cannot have.”
