I was immersed in the odious task of sorting through the last of our belongings when I heard a car pull up outside and heard excited barks coming from the front of the house.

Then Dad yelled, “Come quick, Judy!” “Do I have to right now?” I whined. Sighing, I set the box aside and trudged out to see what the commotion was all about.

When I got to the front door, I saw Bambino, our beloved rat terrier, jumping around, begging for hugs. The people who had shown up were just as excited, exclaiming happily and showering Bambino with kisses.

We were moving to the US from Brazil for the last time, and everything had to go, one way or another, including our pets — and the new pet owners had shown up two hours ahead of schedule, unable to wait any longer.

I had been postponing my last goodbye to Bambino, trying to delay the inevitable. I was not ready for this turn of events. I could not wrap my head around who these people were or what they were doing at our house. I stood on the pavement trying to take it in, wondering what all the fuss was about. It wasn’t until Bambino jumped in their car, full of excitement for an adventure, that it hit me: I would never see him again. I lamely waved goodbye…
