What Do You Do In Life? I’m a Full-Time Daughter
I relied on my parents for three months before finding a job, and I wouldn’t want to do that again
Summer, Hong Kong.
10 am, my alarm went off only for me to snooze.
11 am, it buzzed again, snoozed, and this time, I opened my eyes to delete it altogether. After all, why did I need to wake up? I pulled up my duvet and dialled up the AC as the morning sun was shining on my lazy ass.
I wasn’t like that when I was in university before the summer. Every day, I would wake up at 7:30, head to the gym and hit the lecture hall, followed by a whole day in the lab.
Everything changed when I moved back to Hong Kong without a job after I had graduated from a British university with a “useless” chemistry degree.
One month ago, London.
It was late at night, but I didn’t feel sleepy. It had been like this for a while now. Disoriented about graduating and moving on with my life, I lost sleep for several months.
The cost of living and the job market were rock bottom in the UK, and my parents wouldn’t support me anymore with rent, so I decided to move back to the unfamiliar familial home after a decade of living alone in England.
