Late one night there was a knock at the squat door.

I opened the door to three stern-looking women. My heart leaped for a second, mistaking Anna for her sister Celine, my all consuming crush. The other two women I didn’t know, and their expressions were grim.

“We’re looking for Cam, Lucinda.” Anna said, as they followed me into the kitchen. The three of them surrounded me closely, the second clue that this was not a friendly visit.

“She’s not here.”

“Where is she?”

“She’s giving someone a lift home, she could be back soon.”

A significant look passed between the three, and Anna said,

“She has a car, since when?”

“Yeah, it’s new.”

Now one of the other women spoke up. She didn’t introduce herself.

“Where did she get the money for a car?”

“I dunno, she won it?” I said.

“You didn’t ask?”

Uh oh, I thought to myself, is Cam in trouble?

“No, look, what’s going on?”
