Context is Everything

Eating a 3 michelin star meal from a takeout container in your car just isn’t the same.

Seeing that movie that you’ve been waiting to see while watching it on your phone in the loud metro car just isn’t the same.

Context is everything. And not just when it comes to written words.

We hear and understand things within the context of our own experience.

We’re trapped in a context and the only way out is to expand it.

Expanding the context begins by accepting that you can’t see what you can’t see.

It’s not just about what you think, it’s about the context within which you have come to your conclusions.

A fish might think that living under water is the perfect solution for supporting life. The fish might think that nothing could survive outside of the water.

This fish can’t see what the fish can’t see.

The fish’s conclusion is off because the context and experience of its life have failed to introduce it to the very thing that proves its theory wrong.

Realizing that you’re a creature of context shouldn’t make you shy about having opinions, but it should fill you with humility and encourage you to expand your context.
