What Do Terrorists Eat for Breakfast?

Or How to Love Your Enemy

Loving your enemy is difficult which is why it’s rarely tried and why it’s almost never found to be a reasonable option in our societies.

Love is nuanced, it’s free of the either-or, black and white thinking that our anxious societies operate by.

And so it’s difficult for us. Although it’s the simplest and most pure of all concepts, we can’t handle it.

Frustrated, we float it away on our ignorance.

But…

If you do want to love your enemy, let’s say a terrorist, begin by asking this question:

What does he eat for breakfast?

You don’t know?

Maybe he wakes up every morning at 7:14am and makes Huevos Rancheros, or pours himself a bowl of Cheerios®, or maybe he’s health conscious and currently practices intermittent fasting and doesn’t eat breakfast at all…

The point is, you probably don’t know what he eats for breakfast.

And to find out, you’re going to have to do some digging, some searching, and maybe even get to know him a bit.

Once you come back from your dig, you might not see him exactly how you saw him before — as the nonhuman, hatred-filled person, too lost to even do something as human as eat breakfast.

The breakfast question is relevant in the way that only a seemingly absurd and irrelevant question can be relevant.

This question is about seeing things differently. It’s about seeing around the headlines that obscure the view of the individual and getting to the heart of the person.

Why have we never thought to ask, what do terrorists eat for breakfast?

Maybe we’d have solved this problem a long time ago, or at least understood it a bit better.

Got an enemy?

Find out what they eat for breakfast.

Want to go the extra mile?

Eat breakfast with them.

Side note: Just because a terrorist eats breakfast does not mean that he should not face justice, be separated from the general population, or be kept from harming people.
