Day 7 & 8 — The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

We started off the “day” with some midnight karaoke actually! We went to a place that was about 500 RMB on a Saturday night (which we later found out was relatively expensive).

The interesting thing is how they do KTV here. Apparently, you have to only spend a minimum of 500 RMB on drinks, snacks, and other treats and the room is complimentary. So we got a bunch of drinks, fruit platters, and other goodies!

Needless to say, it was a blast.

Afterwards, we woke up and packed up and got the Chinese groupon equivalent package deal for a massage! The only other professional massage I had was in Thailand and this massage absolutely blew it out of the water.

The massage itself was about $15 USD for 1.5 hours and it was a very relaxing massage. My favorite part was actually when they rub hot stones all over your back!

Here comes the sad news: our flight got delayed by 2 hours. And then outright cancelled.

To make up for this, we got a nice tasty lunch!

The main attraction: hot and spicy chicken wings. Very tasty with a lot of salt and seasoning.

We decided to just splurge and get two rooms in the Shangri La hotel (a nice 5 star hotel) for the night. Basically, this day was wrecked by the flight cancellation.

Day 8: Finally, our flight to Shanghai came through. After we landed, we took a super fast high speed maglev.

It hit about 300 km/h. Although it was going super fast, it felt pretty smooth. About 50 RMB to get into the city one way.

After checking into our Airbnb, we got so much yummy tasty food, recommended by Andrew’s girlfriend, who lives in Shanghai.

This dish, which looks weird and spongey, was actually very tasty! It’s “glutten” mixed with vinegar and soy sauce and maybe some sesame oil. Highly recommend!

Some beef “burgers”. Empty buns with some DIY beef filling. Wasn’t the tastiest but was a fun experience. The beef could’ve been better quality.

But the main attraction: obviously gotta get the Xiao Long Bao. This is one of the specialties of Shanghai and I highly recommend! It’s called a “soup dumpling” where there’s hot soup inside with some meat and veggies. It’s probably one of China’s most unique dishes and it’s a splendid blast of savory juices in your mouth.

Afterwards, we went to the bund where you get a great view of the Pudong side of Shanghai. It’s a must see tourist attraction that is absolutely packed with people. Good luck getting good photos though with the crows.

Its a stark contrast with one side being old European buildings and the other being new modern Chinese skyscrapers.
