Digital Minimalism

Last Friday (October 4) the Innovation Studio course started and with it, the beginning of a challenge, in my case, I decided to decrease my digital activity for 14 days, leaving it just for the indispensable.

I must say that the beginning was something simple, from Saturday until Tuesday I took a few days off in Spain and being there surrounded by those who I consider my second family, made it easier to forget to look at my cell phone or even to use my laptop.

I think that does not count as true progress, so for me, the real challenge began yesterday afternoon, the moment I returned from my trip.

To start I will review the apps that I use most, so I can put together a plan for the following days and significantly reduce the time I spend on my cell phone.

1. Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook.

My top 3 of the apps I use the most since they allow me to be in touch with my friends and family on the other side of the world.

I don’t know if I can give up this, but I will try to limit the time I spend in these applications when I’m really not talking to anyone. The first step: do not review stories.

2. Gmail

I work as a freelancer and most of my clients are in Colombia. I constantly look at my email and try to respond to everything in my inbox.

I can’t meet with my clients personally, so emails have become a vital part of my work since I moved to Italy. From my experience I know that not all emails are urgent, many do not need an immediate answer, so I will send a message to my clients asking them to specify the subject of the message, whether it is urgent or not. That way I can dedicate a specific time of day to answer emails and not have to be checking the app all the time.

3. Netflix

I’m addicted to watching a series, it’s what I do every day before I go to sleep.

I will exchange series for books. I have a huge list of books that have been recommended to me, and I think this is the perfect time to start reading some of them.

I will be publishing my daily report at the end of each day, to see how it went and if I really managed to reduce my activity or not. I’ll start today and see how it goes.

October 9. It’s only the first day and I feel like I fail
