The most anonymous Aggie

At every home Texas A&M football game in College Station, during one break in action, the stadium will display some Aggies in the NFL and what they did the following week. Over the past several years, this has bee ndominated by stars such as Von Miller and the Bennett Brothers, or recent grads like DeShazor Everett.

This Sunday a name popped up that I could not recall. Nor could anyone around me. Don Muhlbach is his name.

This is his 12th season as the longsnapper for the Detroit Lions.

I don’t remember him from his time at A&M even though I attended and watched many games during his time there. I could only find one image of hum from his Aggie playing days.

That’s the greatness of being a longsnapper, as long as you perform your job, nobody can remember you long enough to try and replace you.

As a further illustration of how anonymous Don is, Don was congratulated for his 200th NFL game at the stadium, yet the Detroit Lions website states that he only appeared in 153 games before this season. I cannot figure how to reconcile the two different figures, but the discrepancy should serve as a quiet tribute to all of the unsung longsnappers, backup quarterbacks and swing lineman that manage to eek out a career two to three times as long as their more flashy teammates.
