The Republican Party was started
On March Twentieth, Eighteen Fifty-Four.
Some members of the Whig Party parted
Just six short years before the Civil War.

The liberal Whigs did not want slavery
To exist in Western territory.
These liberals found the thought unsavory,
And broke away to start their own story.

Abe Lincoln and Amos Tuck were the guys
Who founded this political faction.
These guys were abolitionist allies
And supported big government action.

These Republicans were liberal dudes
Holding the most progressive attitudes.

Note:

The modern Republican Party was founded on March 20, 1854. The Republican Party was formed by a coalition of mostly Whigs, along with some Free-Soilers and Democrats, who opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The Kansas-Nebraska Act sought to extend slavery into Western territories, a concept that the newly formed Republican party opposed.
