1. Beam

Alex Stephany, the founder of Beam, got to know a homeless man at his local Tube station. The man spent decades out of work, and Alex could see his condition going from very bad to even worse. When the man had a heart attack, Alex asked himself: What could we do to make a real difference in that man’s life?

Solving a problem as big and complex as homelessness requires government, charities, social enterprises, tech startups, and regular people to work together. So Alex launched Beam in 2017, with the goal of crowdfunding new career opportunities for homeless men and women.

Check out Alex’s TEDx talk to hear more about his mission!

The team provides homeless people with a support network and helps them learn career skills to leave homelessness for good. They’ve been working hard to build scalable technology and services that will change millions of lives — and you can be one of them.

The 2020s is often called the decade of climate action. So BeZero Carbon helps organisations adapt to and prosper in a low carbon future. It offers a systematic approach to change through three pillars: smart decarbonisation, offsetting 2.0, and natural capital.

BeZero’s team bridges capital and conservation to embed ecological outcomes into everyday decision-making. Their full-service climate solutions business was established in April 2020 and ensures clients that their offset residual emissions are genuinely helping to achieve climate action.

Many people consider their pets part of their family. PetsApp is a platform that allows veterinary clinics and pet owners to communicate quickly and easily. Pet owners use PetsApp to chat with the vet team that they know and trust to get advice on any issues their furry friends are having. They can also make appointments, hold video calls, pay outstanding bills, and order medication.

Since launching in January 2020, PetsApp has raised over $4 million in investments and became the number one rated veterinary app. Thousands of vet professionals now use the PetsApp platform. And the team says they’re “doggedly determined to make veterinary care purrfect.”

4. Ankorstore

The team behind Ankorstore doesn’t want to live in a world where Amazon is the only option for shopping. They believe local independent retailers have a huge impact on the soul of the cities and villages where we all live.

Ankorstore wants these small businesses to flourish. So they provide them with great tools and purchasing conditions to do so. Their marketplace connects the most authentic European brands to thousands of independent retailers around the world.

Ankorstore was founded by the former founders and employees of Etsy, Vestiaire Collective, and A Little Market. And now there are over 20,000 shops registered on the platform across France, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK. But that’s just the beginning!

5. We Are The News

We Are The News (WATN) is a news-based social media platform formed with everyday people in mind. Their mission: to be the world’s most trusted social news platform, empowering their team and communities all over the globe to speak their truth and unite in a desire to make a difference.

According to WATN, freedom of speech is increasingly in danger. Censorship is rife, both in the mainstream and social media worlds. In the UK, 71% of all land is farmland, and farming employs almost 500,000 people. But with the uncertainties climate change brings, farmers all over the world are struggling to keep nations fed and combat food shortages. 9. Everpress

Everpress is a global fashion marketplace connecting people to unique, ethically produced, and sustainable products made by independent creatives.

Each year the growing demand for fashion puts a massive strain on natural water sources and pumps the equivalent of 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. The founders of Everpress say that if retail doesn’t change, the world will see mountains of waste due to low-quality fast fashion.

Their sustainability journey supports grassroots creators and reduces fashion waste. According to their team, Everpress has already managed to save over 336 million litres of water and over 124,000 tees from landfills using their pre-order model.

The company has a goal to be climate and water positive by 2025. And by 2022, it aims to have every Everpress purchase backed by the option to return your T-shirt, even after you’ve worn it, for a discount on future purchases. All returned tees will be recycled or upcycled. It also hopes to be a fully credited B-Corp company by that time.

10. Taptap Send

The Taptap Send app lets immigrants send money back home to emerging markets instantly, securely, and at very low prices.

Global remittances account for over $500 billion annually, most of which moves back into developing countries. But the market is dominated by traditional services that are expensive, so money can take days to arrive and has limited reach in rural areas. Taptap Send is working on making the UN Sustainable Development Goal of bringing cross-border remittance costs down by 2030 a reality today.

Since launching in 2018, they’ve already moved tens of millions of dollars and reached tens of thousands of customers. In addition to Reid Hoffman, Taptap Send is backed by Canaan, Flourish Ventures, Helios, the Omidyar Network, and others. Their team members come from top-tier tech companies, professional services firms, and industry leaders, including Twitter, Yahoo, Amazon, Google, McKinsey, Bain & Co, KPMG, Cravath, and Vodafone.

According to Taptap Send, tech companies can sometimes trick themselves into believing they’re single-handedly transforming the world for the better. But their team genuinely believes they can impact millions of families and even contribute to the growth of emerging markets.
