Our resident Unicorns are always curious and so when they heard that the founder of GoCardless and the CTO at Songkick had teamed up to create Nested, and were looking for a Head of Marketing, they pranced off to find out more.

What does Nested do?

Nested gives people a guaranteed sale price for their property. This lets them buy their next property before they’ve sold their old one. Particularly useful if you’ve seen your dream home but are going to miss out due to being caught in a pesky property chain.

How did the idea for Nested come about?

GoCardless founder, Matt Robinson was buying a house and discovered how much of a disadvantage chain-buyers were to first-time or cash-buyers. He happened to be in the fortunate position where he was able to secure the property he wanted, but with entrepreneurialism in his blood he spotted the problem, and wanted to do something about it.

Nested was born with the aim of helping to free people stuck in a chain so they too can secure their dream home. The first hypothesis was, we know roughly how much a house will sell for and roughly how long it will take so surely there must be some way of guaranteeing that. That’s what Nested does.

Having launched just 4 months ago they modestly confess to making significant revenue already to the extent that they will be profitable this month. This profit will be short lived as they invest in growing operations quickly to take Nested to market. They are looking for fewer, better people so…

…Why work at Nested?

If you’re keen to become Head of Marketing at Nested, it will be reassuring to know that both Phil and Matt are both startup second timers (GoCardless and Songkick respectively) and so understand the importance of using their previous experiences to shape and operate their new company.

“I think the key difference is that we’re a little older and (hopefully) wiser. Our average age is early 30s vs early 20s in the early days of GoCardless and Songkick, and that extra decade of relevant experience makes a tonne of difference.” — Matt Robinson

With eight people in the team already, they need to grow quickly but want to build the new team carefully; the key is hiring the right people, not lots of them.

Candidates need to align with the Nested values which include acting honestly, picking up the phone first and being a positive team player. Nested are looking for a smart, driven team who have experience of building successful startups and want to genuinely make a difference for customers.

They will want to see real examples of the work they do and will set challenges early on in the process plus the final stage is a trial-day working with the team.
