Unicorn Hunt
A Field Guide to Unicorns

So you got your job via Unicorn Hunt (3beards job board) that’s pretty cool. How did you hear about the site?

I was Googling pretty vague terms (like “Javascript developer”) and clicking like mad on all the links that came up. After seeing the usual Indeed, Reed and totaljobs stuff I found a posting on a site called unicornhunt.io, and I ended up looking at a bunch of jobs on that site before I found WIREWAX.

What do you like about UH / how does it compare to other job boards?

It seemed much more targeted at the jobs that I wanted to do/the industries I wanted to be in than some other sites. The UI is simple and even the most boring job descriptions seemed friendly and welcoming. I get so many unsolicited emails and see so many postings on other sites which are clearly written by people who have no idea what “HTML5” or “Java scripts” are or what to do with one if they had one, whereas postings on Unicorn Hunt tended to be a bit better/it seems like they are more likely to be written by the actual people I’d be working with.

And you landed a job with WIREWAX! What was the process like once you made your application?

The process was very simple — I got an email back from Dan (our №2 & co-founder), and I had to do a code challenge. I then had two interviews in our London office with various different members of the team, and was offered a job! The whole process took around 10 days, which was probably slightly slower than average due to the fact it was August and a lot of the team were on holiday.

Why do you like working at WIREWAX?

WIREWAX is the leading interactive video tool for creating engaging video experiences. Make shoppable video, trailers, tag your friends… connect anything in video to everything online. It’s a small team that gets a lot done! In my year and two months here I’ve worked across countless projects and really been able to make an impact. My role now has changed significantly from when I started, guided by my interests and what I like doing.

Do you know what it was about you that got you the job?

A willingness to learn and adapt. I wouldn’t say I had masses of experience but I tried to highlight the learning I had done in previous roles and my willingness to continue learning new things.

How did you know it was the right job for you?

I liked the team, I liked the product — and I liked the role they were offering! Starting a new job is always a bit of a risk but I’m happy to say that it’s paid off this time!

Job Hunting is hard work — what is your best bit of advice to others on the hunt for the dream position?

Don’t be disheartened! View it as an opportunity to meet lots of different people and discover different companies. I try to think of interviews as nothing more than an interesting conversation with interesting people — this takes some of the pressure off. If you get a job, great, if you don’t — you’ve still learned something which you can apply in the next interview!

Do you have any life long ambitions? We’d love to hear about them no matter how wild or whacky!

Go to space? 🚀🌠
