An instructions manual

Life: a guide

A flash in the pan

She was never one for reading the manual. Impatient, she would only ever scan the quick-start guides: filing heavy instructions manuals into a drawer for a year or so, reluctantly, just in case. Every now and again they’d migrate from drawer to dustbin without a second glance. “If I don’t know how to do it by now, I never will,” she’d think.

By the time she was middle aged, though, she wondered if she would have fitted in better, understood the expectations of her, been somehow happier, if she had just been patient enough to read the small print.
