With the recent news that Nvidia is focusing AI chip sales on some of the midsize hyperscalers, due to the in-house development by the likes of Google, Meta, and Microsoft, the latter’s plans are worth revisiting, first widely described back in April. Fast forward six months, and the company is ready to launch the Athena chip at November’s Ignite conference, described here and here.

Microsoft is not alone, with even ChatGPT rumored to have their own silicon in development or via a partnership (other than Microsoft). Research from AIMultiple provides more details on the major AI chipset players.

And for something completely different, a great read (but not new) on the origins of the personal computer in Silicon Valley. Surprised that I’ve not read ‘What the Dormouse Said’ previously.
