It’s time to talk about banned books.
We read banned books. We make banned books.
Our very own A Kids Book About Racism appears on several websites suggesting we spread “dangerous ideology.” The book even made it onto Texas Republican State Representative Matt Krause’s 16 page spreadsheet asking if schools have any of the listed books — ultimately recommending they be removed from shelves.
We’re one book of hundreds. The American Library Association cited nearly 1,600 books challenged in 2021 alone. The topic of banned books has gotten more visible only recently, but how are we talking about it with our kids?
We partnered with the National Coalition Against Censorship to write A Kids Book About Banned Books. In this book, we explain what book banning is, and how reading and having access to new information and ideas helps us stop, think, and grow.
A Kids Book About Banned Books is available today as a free download, and comes with the opportunity to donate. All proceeds benefit the National Coalition Against Censorship, Middle Church, and The Conscious Kid.
Yes — some books may make us uncomfortable. Sometimes they explore topics we thought were off-limits. They drive us to consider and include new and diverse ideas, often about marginalized people and perspectives. And these are the things that help us grow.
