One of the cruellest things you can ask a bookworm is “What’s your favourite book?” At best, you’d better strap yourself in for a multiple-hours-long talk complete with PowerPoint slides, at worst you’ll just receive a vacant stare as their brain goes into meltdown.

A kinder way to talk about books with those who love them is to ask about unforgettable books. An unforgettable book might not necessarily be a favourite but it will be one that — for whatever reason — has stuck with someone long after reading.

Here are 5 books that stayed with me after reading and why I think the stories lingered past the final page.

The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson

I bought this book shortly after it was released in 2008 and at the time, I knew nothing about it. I wasn’t aware of the author, I hadn’t heard any of the hype, I just saw it on a shelf and loved the way it looked- from the cover, the black page edges and the title to the sheer size of the thing, I knew I had to read it!

That isn’t my usual book-buying strategy but in this case, it worked and I fell in love with the story behind the eye-catching cover.
