5 Satisfying Reasons to Practice Selflessness Over Selfishness

There is a common belief that selfishness and selflessness are two opposite sides of the same coin. If you’re selfless, you can’t be selfish, and the same goes for the other way around. I propose that having both traits makes us human, and they can fluctuate instantaneously. While it’s true in any given moment, you are either one or the other, let us acknowledge as thoughts are fleeting and we can’t be certain what we will think before we think it, it is best not to classify ourselves. It’s wise to embrace those parts of us that show us who we truly are.

In his article featured in Elite Daily, Paul Hudson says,

“When it comes to everyday life, complete selflessness is a death wish. People would take advantage of you until there is no more of you left to take advantage of.”

Does this mean we need to fall to the other end of the spectrum and practice selfishness to preserve our sense of self? Like everything, there’s a happy balance. Nothing good ever comes of extremes.

While there are benefits to being selfish, here are five reasons why practicing selflessness can move you closer to your goals for a loving, fulfilling life.
