After much debate, we managed to squeeze in a road trip across Ireland! The plan was to hike, explore some castles and learn about the Irish charm! But instead, after dinner on our 4th night Oli got CRAZY terrible food poising… and was bedridden for the rest of our time in Ireland.

It was super scary, we only had a little bit of food in our farm house in the middle of nowhere in Galway county. Maeghan wasn’t able to drive the manual car on the super tiny single lane roads to get anything to help, so Oli drank veggie broth, and ate cookies and cucumber. Not that he could eat much anyways.

We put all our plans on hold for Oli recover and made it to the airport in time for our last leg of the trip in Scotland!

So here is our short stay in Dublin, Galway and on the road!

The first thing we did in Dublin was go to a pub, and get some Guinness, stew & shepard’s pie.
A church inside a glass building.
Found a craft beer bar with craft stout — it’s growing on Maeghan. Also had killer live music, this band was totally awesome (and hilarious).

Next day we did a walking tour around Dublin. And I think we had the best tour guide named Stephen. He was an actor in London, but born and raised in Ireland. We learned a lot and really enjoyed hearing how amazing of a place this city is with his unique family history and perspective.

Dublin Castle that was stormed many times by the Irish when trying to chase the english out.
Looking up there is lots of different buildings and styles.
Temple Bar. We looked in.. there were too many frat / stag / drunk people… so we walked on.
Oscar Wilde was born in Dublin and the house under construction is where he grew up.
We were lucky, even at the end of October the Dublin parks were still green.
Walking around town.
This boat bus car thing drove by, and the driver yelled at Maeghan and asked if she was on Tinder.
Stopped by Trinity University.

The Long Library is the permanent home to the famous Book of Kells. Two of the four volumes are on public display, one opened to a major decorated page with crazy colours and attention to detail. The other to a typical page of of cursive text. The books are all hand made from leather binding and leaf pages that are pressed flat.

There were Nobel Peace Prize medals there, very old original pictures and notes from Stephen Hawking and more.

After a few days in Dublin we had big plans to tour around the west coast of Ireland, hike and eat all the sea food. But we were stuck at the car rental place for 3 hours(!!!!).

But when the time came we hit the road in our green monster — Hyundai Kona.

This picture is from Google, I took one like it with the green hills and light by Maeghan’s finger got in the way….
We made it to Galway playing some Ed Sheeran and walked around town.
How cute are these boys playing Irish folk music on the street!
Stopped by the Galway Cathedral that was just completed 50 years ago.

After a day on the road we made it to our hub for the rest of our trip — a farm house in Galway county.

Our little farm house kitchen with the bright beautiful sun!
There are ruins all over the place as you drive through the tiny scary roads.
We did a hike near the house one afternoon and the weather was more volatile than Calgary! Sun, rain, clouds, sun and hail!
Slowly getting warmer and taking off layers.
How surreal is this rock swirl!
oli recreating the Banksy photo.
Wooly cows!
Blue sky. Rain cloud. Front and back, taken at the same time.
We were right beside this little oyster cottage that turned out to be a special place! Presidents, artists and actors have all made their way to the Morans Oyster Cottage for some amazing sea food!
Green Crush and enjoying a beautiful sunny day at the Cliffs of Moher!
You can walk along the cliffs and enjoy the view.

There were signs that said not to sit on the side of the cliff, because of erosion there can be landslides…. but so many people did.
