Recent mainstream media headlines declare the infinite wisdom of the Australian government's law-enforced ban on teen social media use.

I’m not exempt from doing stupid things. For example, as two loving, recovering parents, my wife and I made plenty of rules (laws). We raised two sons who are now healthy, happy adults and parents.

  • For example, we forbid the boys from drinking alcohol, and they drank alcohol.
  • We warned them about using drugs. They did drugs.
  • We gave them driving lessons and paid a pro to teach them more. They still crashed the first car we gave them.

We learned more about human nature than in any textbook we never read.

And in time, we did our best to teach them the difference between good, bad, right, and wrong.

They are successful men today. Both boys are parents. They suffered the consequences of their mistakes, including breaking the law.

Now, my wife and I kick back and watch them do their magic. Our kids get to make the laws in their houses, and our job as parents has shifted to the…
