Would I still crave it if I could have it all for free? Would it still taste the same? | Image

Last time I had coffee with a friend, he was explaining how people in Dubai are happier than us because they have a lot of oil resources, money, free education, free health care, etc. They don’t even have to pay taxes.

“How are they happier?” I replied, confused by his perception. “Then what drives their lives? Abundance? What do they desire and long for?”

I wasn’t referring to Dubaians, but his perception of them. “What does life without desire mean to you?”

I believe there are two key facts in life to consider:

  • We all pay our ‘taxes’ one way or another.
  • One man’s trash is another man’s treasure (and vice versa).

I increasingly believe that if we could have everything, we would probably cease to crave and desire.

The experience is similar to using cheat codes in a computer game. For example, when I enter the ‘god mode’ and become immortal, the game is captivating for a while, but it relatively quickly becomes predictable, unchallenging, and boring.
