Olivia de Havilland performed in 49 feature films and won multiple Academy and Golden Globe awards. But her career almost ended well before stardom.

In high school, “her passion for drama led to a confrontation with her stepfather.” He believed that “acting could only lead a fine young woman astray.” So “when he learned that she had won the lead role of Elizabeth Bennet in a school fund-raising production of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, he gave her an ultimatum to either stay home or not return home.

Not wanting to let her school and classmates down, she left home forever, moving in with a family friend.”
